How Invisalign® Is Used to Treat Overbites
When it comes to improving the overall alignment and appearance of a person's smile, most people think of braces as the primary option. At our Lake Jackson dental care center, we're pleased to offer Invisalign® as an invisible orthodontic treatment. Countless people have benefited from Invisalign®, which is able to straighten teeth as effectively as braces in many cases.
Numerous people have asked us if Invisalign® is able to treat overbites. Let's take a moment to consider this matter.
How Invisalign® Works
Invisalign® is an advanced alternative to traditional orthodontic treatments that has become popular with teenagers and adults. Rather than relying on brackets and wires, Invisalign® using clear, custom-molded retainers. These Invisalign® aligner trays are worn for two weeks at all times and then swapped out for a new Invisalign® tray. Thanks to the careful custom computer design, Invisalign® will gradually improve the alignment of your teeth.
Invisalign® treatment takes about as long as wearing traditional braces. The difference is the convenience and the aesthetics. You can remove the aligner trays easily, clean them without hassles, and there are no challenges in brushing and flossing. Also, when the Invisalign® tray is in place, it is virtually undetectable.
About Overbites
An overbite refers to a situation in which a person's upper teeth rest too far over their lower teeth, concealing the lower teeth from view. This can lead to problems with biting and chewing, placing excessive stress on certain teeth rather than properly distributing the pressure on the teeth. In addition, an overbite can contribute to teeth grinding in some cases. This is why orthodontic care is often recommended when a person has a moderate or severe overbite.
Can Invisalign® Treat Overbites?
In many cases, the answer is yes.
Invisalign® is quite effective at adjusting the upper and lower teeth, improving overall alignment and helping people with overbites have better-looking and much healthier smiles. When the shape of the palate or the position of the lower jaw are the primary causes of an overbite, however, Invisalign® may not be an ideal treatment option.
Other Concerns for Invisalign® Candidacy
Good candidates for Invisalign® should be in their teens or older and have realistic expectations about the treatment process and what it involves. They should understand the importance of proper cleaning, oral hygiene, and followup visits, and be aware of temporary side effects associated with wearing a new aligner tray.
Alternatives to Invisalign® for Overbites
Traditional braces may be better suited to treating your overbite, particularly when your overbite is the result of problems with the jaw and anatomy of the mouth rather than just the teeth per se. It may also be necessary to adjust the spacing and shape of the upper palate to improve dental alignment. This involves the use of palatal expanders.
